Hi all,

Firstly glowworm have told me that my boiler is obsolete and can no longer send out an engineer as they don't have parts.

I have a problem with insufficient hot water reaching the shower. I have to lower the power on the shower to have it hot enough and have it on Max heat. I have fitted a brand new Mira shower so the shower isn't the problem.

I don't want to buy a new boiler as i will have to pay again to have it moved when I get an extension built in a few years time.

I've have had a few boiler guys round who said that the 2 bar of gas that were burning when heating hot water were very low and they thought it might be the PCB or the gas valve restricting it.

I changed the pcb for a new one the other day but no joy.

I've also had to replace the DHW diaphragm and switch as they were leaking and corroded

Would be grateful for any advice.
My gut felling tells me it's the heat exchanger clogged up and restricting the flow but a plumber disagreed as it doesn't make noise like a kettle or go hot and cold at the tap. When using the shower in winter it does sometimes go hot and cold though.

Any advice much appreciated

Stop messing around with your boiler if you don’t know what you’re doing, obtain a gas engineer for repair or quote for a new boiler.

I've had 2 gas engineers round and they couldn't really pinpoint the fault. Just wondered if an experienced gas engineer on here has come across the problem before and could shed a bit more light on it

We possibly have, however the rules are we don’t give our gas advice in a public/open forum. Parts are still available for that boiler. Maybe get one who specialises in Glow-worm?

Out of curiosity what model of shower is it?

Which shower was installed before :?:

 Has the new shower mixer valve been set up correctly,it matters (y)

Even with a boiler past its best,a safe & comfortable shower experience is possible, trust me i am old :censored:

It was just a crappy thermostaic bar shower I bought from Victoria plum for £30

The new one is a mira agile ERD.
I think I remember messing with it to try and set it up but no joy.

Both have the same problem though have to reduce the power to get hotter water

The new one is a mira agile

the agile shower mixer valve is an excellent item, its needs competent setting up on balanced hot & cold flow pressure just like most showers. Fitting the agile would have needed significant pipe alterations for its unique 50mm pipe centers.

the erd function needs other considerations :D

if your burner pressure was 2 bar as you say, then you HW would be the least of your problems, you wouldnt have to worry about replacing the boiler, it would have left of its own accord

The PCB on this boiler needs to be set up by someone that is qualified and knows what they are doing. You need to find a good gas engineer that is familiar wit this boiler. Swapping the PCB without setting it up correctly could make the boiler dangerous.

Diagnosing whether the boiler is burning enough gas and safely comes first, if it is then they can do very basic temperature checks to see where the heat is going and if theres a blockage. (wont pinpoint the location of blockage but will confirm if its there or not)

But these things require experienced good engineers to do, and to do safely. What youve done could mean your boiler is currently already dangerous and as such we can only recommend getting somone familiar with the boiler to work on it. These are very old boilers with some spares unavailable and dangerously DIYing things on it to hope it will last years is madness. Pay the money and get it fixed or replaced by somone that knows what their doing.
