Its sounds unlikely but 6 months is normal, a few do 3 months and some never seem to need recharging.

Possibly the moving baffle is jammed and not covering the water/air interface.

Since an external EXV will cost about £100 installed then its less that a tenth of a new cylinder that seems th way to go! If you can fit it yourself then its only about £30 to buy!

Huge thread recovery, however I am looking at either one of these cylinders or an alternative unvented tank.

Pros: Well insulated so low losses, well known and proven, now have a life/30yr warranty.
Cons: Larger size due to air gap, ability to service air gap.

Presumably it is sealed for death inside and non-serviceable? Is there some sort of seal, or the airgap baffle just free-floating to reduce surface area.

Buy a Joule Cyclone, or if you really want the stupid floating baffle, a Cyclone Air. I really can't see why you would though, the baffle is far more trouble than it's worth

Is this a DIY job? I've had conflicting advice. As it attaches to the cold side, someone said it's OK. But isn't it part of the sealed system, therefore qualifications needed?

Mine also needs recharging every 6 weeks, but it is 20 years old.

As far as Im aware, technically any installation or servicing of the unit requires qualification, but your not working on the unit its self by adding in an expansion vessel, the vessel its self has no direct impact on safety only the safety valves on the cylinder and overheat devices, so by adding a vessel in I cant see any reason why you couldn't DIY that, just dont modify anything else on the installation, only a tee pice and hose/pipe to vessel and you cant really go wrong

I got bored of recharging my megaflo airgap every 3-6 months and had a potable external EV fitted. I wouldn't buy an overpriced megaflo next time around.

Have to agree, I'd always go for a cylinder with external vessel,

I can see the cons of having something which goes wrong, vs a external expansion vessel you can change. However I can also see the advantages of an internal system in terms of heat losses and insulation of the system, plus neatness.

Which is why I'm trying to work out what the airgap is and how likely to fail it is. However it appears very good from what little I see.

Joule stuff seams fine and a good price, but the recovery times and standing losses are significantly more which puts me off if I'm honest.

You fit the expansion vessel to the cold supply going into the cylinder so their is no heat losses with regards to that vs airbubble.

Some megaflops have been known for the baffle in the unit to break down, ending up with having to charge the bubble more frequently and also finding small plastic/gel type particles in the water ways/filters of taps, showers etc.

Ahh, yes. Fair enough! Thanks for that obviously correction to my oversight.

Ah right. Heard of more regular top-ups and that being put down to a stuck baffle, but that's the first mention of it breaking up. Where they earlier ones (what years) or currently production spec do we know at all. Just wondering.

As said, presumably access to the baffle is sealed for death during cylinder construction.

Just reading up on this as we're due a new cylinder and have been quoted for a Megaflo.

Might have missed it, but how old is your cylinder? Was it fitted by you or came with the house?

Also, who needs to do the annual service? The above suggests if done correctly they would have covered the whole cost.

I'm fairly impressed they are willing to supply a new one, which has knocked a grand off the price, if still a reasonable amount of work and cost compared to just fitting a new external expansion vessel.

Cheers

@dhutch , this post is about the internal membrane breaking down and blocking filters and appliances, an external expansion vessel will not make any difference to the contamination

Because i didnt have it serviced the deal was they would supply the item but not fit
I can sort of understand that only if servicing would have prevented the fault you are getting. I have no idea what’s involved in servicing one of these - can anyone on here give some insight as to what, in a service, would have prevented this from happening?

What was the outcome of this, new cyclinder from Megaflo under warranty? Who paid installation costs?

Anything can happen but it's a bit worrying if it's breaking up after 7years. Only asking as we're to replace an old 150l vented with a 200-250l unvented and plumber of choice has quote for a Megaflo.

Thanks Daniel
