I am painting an exterior wooden frame window which in the past has had flaked paint right down to the wood. As I am now re-painting it I am wondering if there is anything wrong with putting an extra layer of gloss paint on the worst parts where the flaking occurred before, ie the window 'beads', where the frame meets the glass.

I have put down an undercoat and 2 gloss coats - and I am now wondering if a 3rd gloss coat on these vulnerable areas would be a good idea, or is there some reason that is not advisable?

Thanks

Too late now, but I find the preparation of the wood, and a first-class primer (I favour oil-based Aluminium wood primer outdoors) is the most important step.

Sometimes the beads are hardwood mouldings which need a really good primer.

These beads have previously been treated with wood hardener - I assumed it was OK to paint over that with an undercoat + gloss.

I am beginning to think it is the window cleaning 'squeegees' that are used by window cleaners that are damaging the paintwork on the beads. The rest of the paintwork seems to last much better.

Good point - are there any cleaners there that use the modern "treated water and hose/brush" from the kit in their vans ? Water dries and leaves no marks.(y)
