I'm planning a knock through between my kitchen and dining room and need beam/RSJ calculation (and drawings?!) For building control, but the local structural engineer is "unable to assist in the small project" as they are "too busy". Has anyone used an online Structural Engineer? One I was looking at suggested a 48 hour turn around. Obviously you have to pay extra for that privilege, but I just want someone to do the work!

Any suggestions?!

Is there just the one structural engineer covering the whole of Devon? Have your phoned Cornwall?

Online services rely on just basic information which you must provide and they will calcualte a beam, and you tend not to get a drawing (but may not need one). They may miss site specific stuff and come with loads of caveat's - check this and that etc.

Does your council actually need calculations?

There are only a few here in Torquay, but to be honest I didn't think to contact anyone more further afield as if they have to travel, it would increase the costs - hence why I was looking at online that may not need to travel?! Kind of contacdiccting myself there, but only going by the information I already have to hand.

I was told that the council building control inspector would need calculations, but I will phone the council and double check. Seems like such a lot of work for a simple knock through but I understand the importance of getting it right.

Ive used quick-calcs .com - he is old school and very experienced.

But note Woodys comments.

Thanks Notch,

I've just looked at the website you suggested, unfortunately, the "contact us" tab doesn't work and there is no email address anywhere else on his site.

www.beamcalculation.co.uk/

I've used these, the self entry service, but they do other design services too.

Many councils will accept beams of certain spans without calculations, or if you use a standard off the shelf lintel, that wont need justifying either.

If I remember correctly, my BCO officer said beans under 4m did not require SE calcs. Seemed strange to me but I took him up on the offer and specced myself. 1 year on and no collapse or family deaths..... result.
