The recent weather has brought to light a serious drainage issue in our garden. About 4 metres from the house. The patio/flags meets the grass and lawn. The flags slope into a corner. The recent bad weather has made that corner get clogged up and a huge puddle. It's only about 2 metres from the house the big puddle which worries me. The flags are just sat on the soil. If I took the corner flag and one next to it up. Dug to a decent depth. Filled with gravel. Would that help the drainage? Also I would like to put the flags back. So how would I go about that. Gravel and then sand then the flag. Would the water drain through the sand?

I saw those myself. But I also noticed a legit proper soakaway has to be 5 metres from the house. For now I need a quick fix. It's suppose to be ok tomorrow and bad for a few days again. I reckon having that natural kind of soakaway with the gravel should do it i just want to know if the flag can go on top or will it be classed as a weak base?

Use sharp sand not building sand, though such will drop through the gravel - maybe just use type 1 mix and compact it as best you can - that’ll provide a decent base for slabs

What's type one base? I have no clue with groundworks at all. I just know gravel is good for drainage. Does my idea seem like it will work and won't cause any problems?

Sorry - it’s a common name used for an inexpensive aggregate used as a stable base. Also called MOT (how these names arose I have no idea) it has a mix of gravel down to dust that once compacted will also allow drainage. Around £35/ton bag last time I bought it

Ministry Of Transport limestone -40mm to dust . that's type 1 (From Ministry spec. roadbuilding);)

Thanks for the replies guys. The rain was that bad today it was up to the house. Definitely needs sorting. Don't want the subfloor flooding. So use landscaping fabric to line the hole. Limestone. Gravel or this type one? What would be best?

Can you dig a drain and have the soak away at the bottom of the garden? Line bottom of drainage ditch with gravel and land drain pipe?

The garden is very long so would be major work. The problem is the lawn slopes down and the patio slopes down. The end of the patio is where the two meet so it's quite bad. It's about 4 metres from the house so I just think stick a drain grid there. Bang a 45 on and dig a big deep hole going away from the house. Line the whole hole with a weed control layer. Fill with gravel. Line the top with another layer and then put about 300mm of soil back. That's what my homework seems to be telling me to do

A length of field drain pipe within the trench (surrounded by pea gravel and membrane) would give it greater capacity to absorb the drained water to then gradually soak away naturally.
