To the left are plastic fittings.

To the right is salt glazed pipe.

I want to paint the lot in Leyland waterbased gloss that I have lying around.

I know it's not ideal, but would it look neat and tidy painted, or not worth it?

The right is lead pipe - that doesn't take paint well, hence the patches where it's flaked off in the past. then you've got flexible butyl ? and stainless steel straps. Then the plastic. None are good for painting- particularly with a water based gloss.(n)

Good analysis but what in the way of solutions?

The only stuff that has a chance of sticking is old fashioned oil based gloss - no undercoat. 2 coats .
