Some other forums have similar clashes. Some do not and ideas are discussed by professionals and amateurs alike. The difference being the polite forums are mostly membership by invitation and may involve an annual subscription.

Maybe, but not always the case. I am a member of multiple forums on multiple subjects. Some forums just seem to attract problems, trouble causers and people who want to tell everyone just how clever they are at the expense of another poster. I belong to a specialised car forum, which is a mix of highly skilled experts and absolute amateurs without a clue, partly, but not restricted to subscribing members. It work worderfully well, rarely a cross word, lots of help from everyone experts and complete amateurs alike. Any attempt at nastiness is stamped on quickly by the mods.

I wouldn’t attempt to tell someone which classic car is best or give advice as to how to repair one.

or are you suggesting that a know nowt can be gassafe registered...... I sincerely hope not.

Oh, I have had several working for me over the years - I think you might be surprised at just how thick some of them can be and the very basic mistakes some make. With that stupidity comes a need to bull themselves up. The more important they claim to be, the less I tend to trust their competence. There are good and bad in all trades I find.

Nothing would surprise me today. Same in the electrical / electronic trades. Trained moneys who sometimes forget the training they were given. ( assuming they were paying attention during the training course, even then they can get an attendance certificate which means nothing )

which makes one wonder why there is a section to which DIYers have no access.
Not rocket science, as you should know because no doubt you will have worked as a rocket scientist in the 70s, the reason it is a closed forum is to allow qualified engineers to discuss technical issues, the reason this forum must be closed is SOME people will read what they want to see in posts and then start telling the unqualified how to work on Gas appliances, and if you think that for 1 second that engineers get it easy in that forum think again, there is a goldmine of knowledge in there and if anyone like you thinks that going in there and spouting your rubbish gets it easy, you couldnt be more wrong , they get jumped on from a great height and told in no uncertain terms to learn properly

sarcasm........ doesn't improve your image,. ironically a girl friend from the 1960's went on to work on rocket propulsion systems in the 1970's sadly we broke up before her career began.

So are you confirming that GasSafe registered people in the CC can spout rubbish and need to be jumped on and told in no uncertain terms to learn properly ?

I would have thought that learning properly was a pre-requisition for registration as being GasSafe

Yes, I have always been suspicious of anyone claiming to be a qualified professional. One big national company I worked for, which claimed to be professional and shall remain nameless, got it in there heads to put everyone through a 17th Edition upgrade course. A one day course including the drive there and back. Everyone, as in the qualified electricians, labourers, plumbers and gas engineers. They were doing everyone in shifts, so many in a day every few weeks. I agreed to take part, until I heard what was going on and that it was open to one and all. Even the company thought it turned them into 'trained, qualified professionals'.

It was a private company offering the course, with a 100% pass rate, no one failed the exam at the end of the day with some thick labourers claiming to be electrically fully qualified at the end of the day. I was even more shocked when it was related to me by one properly qualified individual, that the guy giving the lecture, during the exam at the end, was going round and making sure that the answers given were correct. I was so incensed by all of this, I told the company what I thought of their quick course and made a formal complaint to C&G in London.

It was a BG gas qualified fitter, who came very near to setting fire to my parents home or gassing them in their sleep. He had installed a gas water heater, 'soldering' chrome plated pipe, into a chrome plated fitting, without removing the chrome. It had been leaking gas for months, before I turned up and happened to smell it. Worse still, it was could so easily have been kicked out by someone passing. My parents home again and a gas engineer ran a copper gas pipe in loose contact with an earth wire, in the days before bonding. PD between pipe and wire eroded a hole in the pipe and caused a gas leak, which eventually caught fire. I walked in just as the fire took hold and was able to deal with it.

It’s true! It’s ruthless in the CC at times and rightly so
