Just thought I share a few train journey escapades I've had after starting a new job in Nottingham. I have to commute from Sunny Blackpool.

Week 1. Train from Blackpool North, cancelled. (1 hour delay)
Train back from Nottingham to Manchester, short formation standing room only. Fight nearly broke out.

Train from Manchester back to blackpool cancelled, next train rammed. (1 hour delay)

Week two

Train from

Blackpool on time, arrived late in Manchester, no real issues.

Train from Nottingham, Manchester, shut, re-routed via, Tamworth, Crewe, Preston and Blackpool. (2 hour delay)

Week three, no trains to Manchester, re-routed via Leeds and thence down to Nottingham (2 hour delay)

Week 4. Train to manchester, full and not accepting more passengers. Self service ticket machine not working. (1 hour delay)

Subsequent weeks, Driving!

Northern rail... you are a disgrace!

Still, I suppose look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to pay for any of this so called service.

Are you stopping down there during the week or trying to commute each day?

I used to go to Chesterfield from Liverpool but stayed in a hotel during the week. Fairly straight run but a drag doing it each day.

Nah, stay down, I'd go insane as a daily commute. Possibly last drag away from home, then early bath for me. (I hope)

So it'll be an early start tomorrow as Northern couldn't offer any kind of service today. Thanks NR, you're a star. Fire up the Jag!

I believe there is thing being set up so that any compensation due to be paid can go straight to charity.......

There ya go.....privatisation does help the needy

I've got a slightly better idea, how about they allow me to get to work and earn some money. Bit radical I'll give you.

Anyway it's a sad state of affairs, whilst there are posters on here who knock the North, purely for the reasons of winding individuals up no doubt, it is ridiculous that we just can't really get anywhere in a reasonable time, pretty criminal really.

If its any consolation the worst railway service in the UK is Southern rail

Southern Rail voted UK's worst train service for third year in a row

it is so bad that employers in London when taking on new staff have started to ask which rail service they use .....if its Southern rail....no job!

the whole rail system needs nationalizing, it's supposed to be a service, and there we have it. And before anyone chips in that BR was sh*t, then sadly surprisingly it was better than the privatised services.

If you want to travel somewhere regularly (i.e. commute) then the rail service will on average let you down wherever you are. I used to do a simple commute from Derby to Nottingham and there were often delays and the odd cancellation despite it only being around a 15 mile trip.

On the flip side we use the train a lot to travel around the North East Midlands and the North for leisure and generally the service is very good. My father in law is an anorak for trains and always manages to get us cheap tickets. We did Edinburgh a few months back for £22 each return (from Derby) and over the course of this year have done multiple trips around Derbyshire, up to Cumbria, up to York, to Lincoln, Chester, etc.

The Northern Powerhouse - people fall for soundbites.

As long as London is the financial, political and Government centre - the North will never be more than an afterthought.

This is especially annoying when God's own county is Yorkshire.

Let's just tell London to cede away from the UK to a new island and make Gainsborough once again the capital of England.
