Im soon to be tiling my small downstairs cloakroom which has a solid concrete floor.

The floor is fairly flat but in places the surface is uneven enough to cause me problems when putting down the fairly large tiles (60X30)

Whats the best way to prepare the surface to ensure it is flat enough to ensure a decent job?

I did a bit of research on putting down hardibacker (drill, plug and screw into the concrete) However hardibacker is not recommended for use directly on on concrete. ( not sure why, any ideas?)

The other option was to use self leveling screed....If i use this should i tile directly on top of the screen once set?

Any other options/best practices that you guys can advice

does the "cloakroom" have a WC and basin?

why use such large tiles in a small space - typically much smaller tiles are used in small areas esp. where they can be more giving for an uneven floor surface.

combing the floor with adhesive and buttering the back of the tiles will pick up quite a bit of uneveness.

Yes it does but these have all been removed for the time being as im refitting the whole room.

Regarding the concrete... So no surface treatment or primer at all? ( the sureface is sound, and dry with no cracks)

Just a proper clean to remove any loose dust/debris then adhesive straight on?

minor uneveness can be taken up by adhesive as i advised above.
tile must go under fixtures for a good job. be aware that tile will raise the FFL for the WC and Ped Basin, thats if it has a Ped.
existing skirting might have to be changed.
