How long has plastic push fit been in existence?

Hello all,

Friend asked. He has issues with some grey plastic to copper, and various parties denying system has ever been worked upon since the thirties!

I'm sure HDPE wasn't invented until the mid 50's and I don't think plastic materials prior to that would have been suitable for making pipes. But maybe someone else can give you a more definitive answer.

Casting my mind back to the late 80's when I was learning the trade, and Speedfit I think was available, think the other manufacturers were developing their ranges, but I dont recall the Merchants we used even talking about it, let alone stocking it.

Bartol's Acorn system had been (and gone) I believe, but that was all solvent welded stuff I think, and every Plumbers dread if they came across it at a later stage, as it was a nightmare to do anything with.

we were shown push fit in 83/84 at tech when doing my apprenticeship .

I would say grey plastic would be early 80s Hep2o, there was plastic variatives before that but they were not grey ,alcathene and some others

Acorn was the first and was brown. Still have some in my house. People tried all different pneumatic fittings and experimented before but acorn was the first. Later became Hep20
