Tile over old Marble Fire Surround

I want to tile over an out dated marble surround (see picture).

I was planning to scratch the old marble and then PVA.

Then use a cement based flex adhesive to fix the new tiles (see picture)

And advice greatly appreciated.

It’s a small area but realise these small tasks can turn out a lot harder.

I'd use a strong contact adhesive to fix a suitably sized piece of hardboard and fix the tiles to that. If the marble has a high gloss finish I doubt a pva base will hold anything more than a sheet of paper.

Thanks for your reply. Just so I understand you would suggest sticking the hardboard to the old marble?
