Vaillant Ecotec Pro 28 Anti Cycling and Other Issues

Hi

We recently moved into a new property, don't know how old the boiler is but recently all the radiators were replaced. There is a new remote room thermostat added as well.

First problem is when the thermostat says it's not calling for heat, the boiler is constantly firing up and the radiators get warm, but not piping hot. It is not in comfort mode, I have checked. But the anti cycling symbol is showing. Only way to stop this is to turn on summer mode by putting radiator temp to zero.

Secondly the towel radiator doesn't get warm, but the pipe to it is warm. The valve was jammed when we moved in, although it is apparently new. I have released this and there was a wooshing sound, but still not flowing through. I have bled all the radiators and there was air in some of them, but not the towel radiator.

Also I've attached a picture, can someone tell me what the button on the front is. It is always showing red, but if I press it then it flashes amber.

I have read on a forum about the possibility of the wireless thermostat receiver being wired into the boiler incorrectly. Could this cause the problem of boiler coming on all the time or the anti cycling mode always coming on?

Check your room unit (the thermostat), is it showing you any error messages?

Do you know what model it is? I know the VRC430f unit will be static red on the boiler display if it has lost communication with the room unit.... Low batteries, too far away, etc.... But I thought the room unit also threw an error up at you. May be worth getting someone in to remove the thing and fit aftermarket controls - I’m not a fan of the Vaillant controls and the fact the radio unit is red, suggests to me this is a room unit issue rather than the boiler.

As for the towel rail, get the boiler working first and treat this as a secondary issue, if the flow pipe gets hot, it’s normally the return not open enough.

Hi, thanks for your replies. Just leaving work so will post back later with the thermostat info. Do you know what the button on the front where the interchangeable panel is? It has a red light, but the only pic i could find of one on the internet was showing a green light. It seems lots of the boilers either have a blank panel there or an analogue timer.

That would be the receiver unit. The receiver needs to be paired with the room unit. When you get in post back with what model controller it is and whether it is showing any messages.

Ahh interesting. There is a separate transmitter and receiver which is an instinct Instrt520RF. Could this cause a problem if the old receiver is still attached?

So yes, it can as the Vaillant VRc stuff uses the Vaillant eBus. To be honest, if you don’t have the room unit, you need to unclip the receiver. You don’t need to take the boiler apart to do this, just a good, strong and small tipped screwdriver to lever the middle receiver unit out of the boiler. This should stop it from getting confused signals.

As the instinct is an aftermarket add on, it’s impossible to say from this position if it is wired right, but I’d start with popping the receiver off the front of the boiler.

STD h&s- turn power off before levering the receiver off. Do not remove the front panel of the boiler. If it doesn’t pop off, don’t force it and get a RGI in to do it and check the wiring of the Instinct.

Well I was able to remove the receiver ok, and the boiler doesn’t seem to be doing the anti cycling anymore with (the egg timer symbol). But the heating is still permanently on even when the thermostat is set to off, and the light on the receiver turns off.

So there is a chance that the instinct unit is not wired right.

On instinct receiver (Same as a Salus RT520 I think??) set the slider to manual and off. Hopefully this will turn the heating off.

Probably same yes as the email address for support in the manual is a Salus one. Well I tried switching to manual and off, but this doesn’t turn heating off. So hopefully its a simple wiring issue and not anything else on the boiler?
