What’s your opinion/experience on security alarms? Not a fan of it to be honest since it’s too loud and annoying. But my husband is keen on getting one from this locksmith Dublin company since he was getting anxious after his brother’s house was robbed recently. I think upgrading our locks is enough, but he thinks alarms are needed too. What do you think?

A visible alarm siren may deter burglars from trying to enter the building.
A loud siren will encourage the burglars to leave the building before any responder can arrive.
A silent covert alarm may mean responders arrive before the burglars leave.

Physical security to prevent break ins and subsequent removal of valuables will be better protection than any "normal" alarm system.

Firstly you should do things that are free first.

Closing and doors and windows and ensuring they are locked.
Don't leave valuables on display
Park a high value car in a garage.

Then you can look at extra security
upgrading locks
CCTV and alarm systems
Tracker on your vehicle

no point in having an alarm if its not used and maintained and you leave windows and doors open/ unlocked.

I've gone the CCTV route, and have good locks on doors. Whether it is enough, I'm not sure. I was thinking about putting bolts on my internal lounge and kitchen doors. Weak point is the rear windows that lead to lounge and kitchen. Have solid internal doors, so a bolt locking them when we're out would take something big to break through. Not impossible, but another obstacle.

I was thinking about those window alarms too that you stick on. Might be a cheaper and as effective solution?

Absolutely 100% - we had a burglary one evening and they were out of the house and gone within seconds of the alarm activating. Had the alarm not gone, I suspect they'd have had the two cars away at a minimum.

Before that I was on the fence about alarms, but our rental house had one so we used it. After that, if nothing else, I like to set it before bed.

House alarms are annoying and they do get ignored, but I don't think many burglers are going to hang around to find out - why take the risk. I'd always take quick walk about if my neighbour's alarms went off, just to check for anything obvious

Get one .... as it maybe loud and annoying but this will make the scumbags run... also upgrade the locks and add security lights... burglars like to be in quiet dark places so dont make it easy for them.... a guy i knew years ago fitted alarms for a living and the majority of his calls to fit alarms was AFTER the had been broken into

After a foiled break-in where the thief left the window wide open all day, I now have an alarm that rings me if it goes off. I can now be away from home with piece of mind that whilst my alarm isn't ringing me then I know the house is fine.
