My little quarter-house faces south/west and gets blisteringly hot in sunny weather.

I need new windows but what I'd like is windows with glass that changes its tint from clear on cloudy days to progressively darker according to how bright the sun is, in much the same way as the lenses in my reactive spectacles turn into sunglasses when exposed to sun.

Is there such a thing available here in the UK? Googling suggests there is in The States but I've spoken to a number of window firms here and their eyes glaze over (sorry) when I explain what I'm looking for....

Look up Sageglass by Saint Gobain ( Solaglas/GLass solutions ) . I think that's what you are looking for. I've never used it or even been asked for it so can't comment on how good/useful it is

We fitted a load of that sageglass in some curtain walling to a whole south facing frontage when I worked Solaglas (saint gobain - glass solutions), just called glass solutions now I think, can't tell you if it worked or not as I never saw the building again although the architect wouldn't have spec'd it if it wasn't going to work, can't see it being cheap either, probably need to speak direct with Saint Gobain who will probably ask you to buy through an approved supplier - Ronnie might even be one?

Thanks, that looks pretty much what I'm looking for.

How do I go about finding someone able to make sealed units or whole windows using it?

Ok I've tried their "SageBot Beta" intelligent chat to ask the question, but all I got was a resonse telling me how great SageGlass is. So I filled in their customer enquiry form asking who in the UK will make up sealed units of SageGlass in the UK for my house. Will update the board when I get an answer.

Have you considered glazing film? I have fitted Solyx UltraCool-IR70 Solar Control Film to all our south facing windows, and it has made a really noticeable difference. It also hardly changes the light levels inside.

If you are ordering new windows, you could get it applied to the exterior of the glass before it is fitted....
