I am curious how you guys out there deal with this issue.

If you have two or more horizontal drill holes that need to go level into brick, putting up a TV, shelf, large picture, etc and want them perfect level, the bricks are covered in plaster so you can't see the mortar... one hole goes in, then the next hits the edge of a brick and slips into mortar... you now have two holes not level!

Any trade / experience tricks to prevent this or deal with it when it happens?

Fill both holes & drill them an inch up or down so that you are fixing into brick.

In some cases you may instead/also need to move them across an inch or so to avoid hitting a joint

Because they drill faster SDS drills suffer from this problem somewhat less than percussion (impact) drills do

I sometimes find I can get away with a screw at an angle - I tilt the drill angle so it goes into the brick, the edge of which it has skipped off.
