Hip to Gable build up.

Evening guys, hope all are well!

Currently looking around our road at the various different conversations thinking about what we would like to do and wonder what the difference is between the 2 different hip to gable build types and why you would pick one over the other?

Am I right I’m thinking that the gable is built off of the wall plate?

Personally I hate the build up with the 2 tiles before the gable, and wonder how the build up would be to bring it out flush with the lower wall?
I would like to have it all rendered so think the step in would look awful.

Never seen one like the first one. Isn’t this normally done by just continuing the existing wall (cavity or 9inch) up to a gable and totally re-doing the roof with appropriate ridge beam? Not sure what you mean by built off the wall plate.

Most of the ones I see go up are timber frame, so I assume the gable is built off of the wall plate, that being it’s sole plate.

Good point, a lot seem to be timber frame inner skin, masonary outer. Still not seen the step in though.

Those are both the same structurally, new wall built off the existing.

The first one has retained the eaves overhang, not sure why, maybe an aesthetic choice or its easier than fixing the junction at the front/rear. Don't do this, looks daft.

The second might be externally insulated and clad.

But basically, build up your existing walls and the rest is detailing.

The two are different purely due to aesthetic design of the verge. The gable is in the same place vertical off the wall.

Either internal or external leaf, depending on the how the wall is to be constructed.

Just build up off the external wall in a rendered finish flush with the existing wall as you want to do to form the new gable. Assuming it is a cavity wall just continue up in cavity construction off existing inner and outer skins of the wall.

Slightly off topic, but if the wall was solid brick 9" thick construction and to be externally insulated and raised a little over 2 m, would you copyu what's there and build more solid wall or single skin brick and timber frame inside?
