Evening,
I want to replace a mortice lock with 'privacy' handle but the latter requires a much smaller hole in the door.
Do I need to replace the door or can I fill the old mortice lock hole?

Depends on the handle

My old bathroom door simply used a lock on the inside handle that prevented the square door handle shaft turning.

My new (as yet to be fitted) handles require an actual lock to be actuated by the privacy lock

you can fit a Bathroom Lock where the bolt is operated by a privacy turn and release. What are the dimensions of your old sashlock? Probably ABOUT two and a half inches deep, but be precise, in eighths of an inch and mm, height and depth, and distance from front plate of lock to the centre of the keyhole and the centre of the spindle hole.

Makers name and photograph would be very useful.

Colour of old lock case may also help identify it.

Photo of the door handles in your house may also help.

FYI I did a 'dutchman repair' of the old holes then a few days later fit the new lock the usual way. Seems to be fine.
