I am considering installing a small CCTV system to the house and I am looking for help choosing the right components and getting the best out of what I install. I expect to need the following:

  • One camera under soffits on the garage covering the car and front entrance
  • One under the garage soffits at the rear covering the back of the house and close to French doors
  • Possibly a camera higher up covering the full front of the property. I understand that cameras mounted higher up do not capture faces well so I am looking at using this for a general monitor for people coming and going.
The house is detached with one side access to the front via a gate and 6' fencing to the rear garden - houses to the sides and rear.

HikVision seem to be the camera most recommended. What factors do I need to consider in choosing the right one? Any particular models?

The recorder is the next question:
  • Do you have particular recommendations for make or model?
  • What size hard drive might I need for say 10 days recording with up to four cameras?
  • I do not particularly want to view on a mobile phone
  • Can the output of the recorder be connected into the home aerial distribution system to view on any TV, or would I need a dedicated monitor?
Not sure what I want to spend yet as this will depend on the answers to the questions.

I am sure there will be more questions but thanks in advance!

Not had a play with the colour VU from HIK yetso cant comment, but they could be a good solution to full colour on a night with no light (built in white light I understand) and low lux

however they are limited lens and MP currently.

You should look at the distance from the property and what you want them to be able to do and get the best for your budget.

The color view is no good unless you have a good backlight ( streetlight) ordered one for the chap across the road fantastic , fitted in in car park at work ....rubbish ...

hmm that's interesting, will have to get one to play with is that turbo or IP or both?

the video I saw compared a dark fighter and a colour vu, in no light, darkfighter appeared to use IR, cant say about the colour vu hence why I want to try one.

The aim for the front camera on the garage is to look over the car and the front door -so I would hope to be able to identify faces reasonably well. The high level front camera to monitor the general comings an goings across the front of the property - the low level camera on the garage would then pick up faces. The camera on the rea would be to capture face clearly if intruders go to the rear.

The front camera on the garage would need to view about 10m in distance to the edge of the property. The high level camera would be 10m x 10m covering the drive and garden. Similarly, the rear camera would be 10m or so.

Budget could be £500 - I don't want the Rolls-Royce of systems but equally I want something that does the job reasonably well.

So for £500 you can do ....4 way dvr with 4tb , 4x 5mp turbo cameras 100m cat 5 plus values or coax and psu

I tried poc over cat5e and baluns at the office, I could see very slight banding, faint and customer probably wouldn't have noticed however I could see it, but had no issues with RG59 cable.

Well the RJ45 wouldn't connect to the BNC otherwise...…… so rather than re running RG59 thought I would see how things behaved first, give different options. obviously weren't being used as POC that way but it was an option to be considerd.
