Hi chaps
The MIL's Irish neighbour in Spain has organised and paid for some work on her villa and we need to pay him back. It's 950 Euro's. We're not out there until next year now and he wants it paid in Euro's to his bank in Ireland. The MIL doesn't have internet banking anyway so I'm lumbered with sorting it out. I have his IBAN number. What's the safest/best/cheapest way to do that? We have Barclays, Nat West and TSB accounts if any of them are better than the other.

I used to pay a German supplier using IBAN on a Lloyds account - but thats a business account, I set up a recipient online.

From memory it cost me about £20, the transfer was around £5,000

your natwest account, on internet banking, probably has a section called "payments and transfers" or similar. It may look rather like this:

Payments and transfers
Make a payment or transfer

International payments
Make a payment from your account to an account overseas.

If you select "make a payment" it will probably take you to the "Quick quote" page. the cost depends on amount and country.

The amount you are sending will probably not set off the money-laundring alarms, but IMO it is best to use your main bank account, where you have a record as a dependable customer. They may phone or text you to check.

The bank I'm looking at has a £10 fee for your payment, so not worth going to one of the Foreign Payment agencies.

Lol. Just after posting I remembered my mate has a place in Italy and I thought he might know. He paid it from a Euro account he has so there were no fees. I just had to send him what it cost for €950 and it cost me £847.40.

I don’t think he'll do it for others though! :D
