Hi all,

i’ve recently had a large room skimmed over as we knocked a wall through.

Its all painted and i’m ready to fit the skirting board now, but i’m pulling my hair out because none of the walls seem straight, i’ve offered the skirting up the wall and theres some decent gaps. Its like the wall is bowing in the middle.

Is this normal?

Skimming won’t straighten up a wall. How far out is it? Skirting normally bends to shape within reason.

a good 8-10mm out in some parts. I can get it to bend and screw it into the wall or get a nail gun but i just didnt know if it had been done sloppily

It’s the fault of whoever plastered it (either boarded or plastered) rather than the skim which is only a couple of mm. Once skirtings on and caulked, shouldn’t be very noticeable

Sounds fairly normal.... it's probably not 10mm out, but rather a slight rise followed by a slight fall.

Fit it as best you can, but don't over-bend the skirting as depending on the floor finish it could be very noticeable. Caulk the gap behind and you will probably never notice.....

had a plasterer come in to do it.

is it ok to screw the skirting board in place in the wall?

Yes, maybe Im lazy but I rely on Sticks Like **** to fix them, only fixing screws where they seem to be needed.

Wall plugs without a 'collar' are best, as they knock right through the skirting a lot easier.
