Evening all,

I wish to lower a radiator about 5 inches from its current position on a wall was n a back bedroom

The rad looks late 80’s / early 90’s ... with valves either end thatvate connected to copper pipes ... and is part of a central heating system powered by a combi boiler.

Would the easiest way to do this be as follows ? :

- turn off both valves attached to the rad - thus retaining all water in the rad itself and totally isolating it (as opposed to draining it)

- undo the outer valve connections to the copper pipes .. cut the copper pipes down .... and re-connect to the valves

In my mind this will work, but wanted to check as recently has a new carpet fitted, and don’t wish to leak dirty radiator water onto it

Many thanks in advance, all the best

Pat

Water will pour out of the disconnected copper ends..

Ok ... so turn off water first and also combi boiler ... or does the whole system (as there are two rads located on the floor above) need to be drained ??

The copper pipe will be under some pressure. You will either have to drain down, or use a pipe freezer kit on both pipes.

If you decide to drain down, you may as well drain the radiator too..

Don’t waste your time on freeze kits. You are going to have to drain the system to cut the pipes you may as well just drain the radiator.

Thank you , much appreciate your feedback cheers

ok not as ‘easy’ as I thought ... will call a plumber

Ask the plumber to fit a drain cock at the lowest point in the system if there isn't one, for ease of use in the future.
