I am replacing my wooden staircase with one of steel and wood resting on steel stringers so the old newel post at the base of the stairs is no longer needed.I need to remove it completely so I can lay a floorboard across the area to match the rest of the floor.

I know the newel base could be integrated into the floor joists so what is the best way of reducing it to below floor board level if not remove it completely ?

Yep, used a chisel ti split it and found it was only screwed into the joist so it came out fairly easy and just had to replace the floorboard. Thanks
