Garage duo pitch roof, wall plate to wall plate span a shade under 5m. Pitch 30degrees ish. Thinking a ridge beam rather than trying to span ceiling ties that distance - can I get away with a chunky couple of timbers bolted together or am I looking at a steel?
Was hoping along the lines of a couple of 7x2s...
Could also do purlins if I need to.

People will be wondering, why faff about with either when you can whack some unfussy trusses up there....?

Purely cost, but yeah I’m happy to truss it. But I quite fancy doing a cut one, call me a massochist. Any idea if that ridge beam kinda size would work, or am I way off?

You have given plate - plate span but not the span the other direction i.e. the one the beam will be spanning...?
I was given the spec' of x2, 200mm x 50mm bolted together spanning over about 3.2m, so yours are way off. I'm guessing steel.

Mine was 8.2 x 3.0 and I used a 2 piece ridge beam, 4x2 rafters off that and 4x2 collars? (The horizontal bits).

Probably unconventional but it’s been tiled for 6years now with no problems.

Tony has shares in Ye Olde Victorian Iron, Riveting and Steam Works Ltd, so recommends steel with everything.

Use a timber, fit purlins, or fit raised collars. Either way you'll need to triangulate it with joists at or near plate level.

I don't understand the point about triangulating either.
If you have a steel ridge beam it's deflection will be minimal compared with having a timber ridge board. The idea is then that the rafters 'hang' off the ridge beam and - if they are of reasonable section - will not bend and therefore will not push outwards on the walls.

Agree steel is ideal, but if I can use say 2x 7x2s bolted together it’s obviously easier for me to afford and install

It depends entirely on how long the ridge beam will be end-to-end, which I don't think you have stated.
If your ridge beam was - say - 5 to 6m long, I suspect two 7x2s would deflect too much in the middle, causing the rafters to
push out on the wall plates.
