Hi folks, I’m wanting to make a blackboard for my kiddies to use outside. I’d like to mount it on a wall.

what wood would you recommend that I should use?

I was looking at marine ply? But it seems quite expensive?

I’m looking for a board size of around 1000 x 800mm

Depending on level of exposure MDO would be a cheaper alternative. TBH any plywood left exposed isn't going to last forever, and if the edges are exposed it will last a lot less time (even marine plywood). TBH if you want extreme durability you might be better off looking for a piece of slate.

or that waterproof cement board used for tiling in bathrooms. Hardiebacker or similar.

Give it a few coats of Blackboard pain and you can screw it to the wall

BTW new blackboard paint is not so good for chalking on, you can condition it by rubbing all over with chalk (on their side) then rubbing off with a duster. This might also be necessary if heavy rain washes all the chalk off.

interesting fact:

"Chalks" now sold for blackboards are actually made of gypum plaster now.

No reason why you couldn't mix in a small amount of fine carborundum grit to increase the abrasiveness, is there? Good call on the cement board, BTW
