Wood lined tanks? Elson tanks?

Two houses I've been into recently to do EICRs have had immersion heaters fitted into an old insulation-and-wood clad square water tank. Both houses had back boilers.

What are these tanks called and how do they work? Why did they fit these instead of cylinders?

Just curious! Cheers.

Google Elson Hot water tank and see if that is what you are talking about, we called them that but that was just the manufacturers name, total crap in every way

Were they widely fitted to council houses by any chance?

Images of elson tanks certainly look similar to what I've seen but the ones I've seen only have one system pump and none of the manifold stuff. There seems to be a gravity circuit from boiler to tank in 28mm or 32mm, which goes onto the bottom of the tank. The tank itself has a small copper tank attached to the side of it which I guess is the cold storage. I wondered if these were some kind of mains pressure hot water unit because both of the ones I've seen would have woeful pressure to the bathrooms.

Cheers

My Granny had an Elson calorifier (or something like) in her Council House, big square copper tank IIRC. Elson are now part of Heatrae Sadia I believe. Councils were/are not usually so bothered about budget, if the architects/specifiers liked something, it would be used, regardless of the cost...

Elsan points are for the disposal of the contents of a chemical toilet from a boat or caravan.

Elsan are based in Uckfield - ironic because the town is a S*** hole too. :ROFLMAO:

The side tank is the header tank for both C/H and DHW. Consequently you could not use any inhibitor in the system. If the cylinder is in the airing cupboard and on the same level as the bathroom, then you can see there is precious little head to feed the taps.

I know someone who lives in Uckfield, she'd brighten the place up I would think. ;)
Well, it ain't what it used to be in the 60's when I grew up there. I saw Manor Park going up - that and the Beeching Axe was the beginning of the end. If the lady's on Church Coombe, she's got a good solid house and it's not as rough as it was back then ;) To be Agile like you need to talk about the Curry House there. Not the Picture House .

Manor Park rings a bell, haven't been to the place in years, but got to know a couple of the residents through Social Media over the years. As for sounding like Agile, I dont quote prices, and in this case, I'm doubtful I'd charge her anything. ;)
