Newel cut??

Hi I’m new to this but I’ve got this eye sore newel in the middle of the hallway. Can I cut it short or is it structural?

I would leave that one alone myself. Apart from support people pulling on the bannisters will cause the upper newel post to move.

Going down to the ground floor it will almost certainly be structural.
