run a cable from the existing light.

Possibly, it depends how it is wired.
As it is in the loft it is likely that the supply cable runs to the switch first (rather than the light first) in which case you can.
Do you have the neutral cable at the switch? Maybe two black or blue wires in a connector.

Just connect the new light cable -
Earth to Earth,
Blue to Blue, and
Brown to Brown in '1 way'
There is just a chance that this will result in the light being permanently ON.
If this happens move the new Brown to COM.
And for the avoidance of doubt, switch off the main electric before you start! And use a torch.That's good.
