need advice on finishing wiring for washing machine socket

Hi

I've had builders in and just as 95% completed they have disappeared off into the sunset... I am left with wiring almost completed for a washing machine and tumble drier in my utility room. 2 wires coming out of wall with L N E (x2) linked into one connector block. not sure if separate circuit or not but think so as electrician was VERY belt and braces.

I know I need 2 separate single sockets so as to not overload. Is it simply a case of installing 2 surface mounted blocks and connecting?

Is there anything I should be looking out for?

To me that sounds like part of the ring for the kitchen/utility room. It is unlikely you would put two appliances like that on a spur or seperate radials. If that is the case then you would just put a double socket outlet there.

I would wait and see what the experts say though as I'm not qualified/very experienced yet!

A Dual Box allows you to fit two single sockets, so having 13A load on each (a double socket will be overloaded with two 13A appliances).

Assuming the outlet is on a ring* you put one of the incoming cables into the Left socket, one into the Right, and link between them with 2.5mm cores

*Use your multimeter. With the power OFF an outlet on a ring circuit (that is not a spur) will have continuity between the two reds/browns, and between the two blacks/blues.

There must also be continuity between the two earths, but this is not a reliable indicator of a ring, as earths may be linked e.g. through water pipes.

I think you have an additional problem, as I guess you have not been given an Electrical Installation Certificate.

I have a feeling that you made the mistake of paying the builders too much before they finished. You need to have a retention which is big enough to make them need to finish the work to your satisfaction.

JohnD... you are right ... there was no discussion about retention and yes I paid pretty much everything leaving only a little outstanding (1k) on a £100k+ job ... you learn the hard way ...

One thing - about the Electrical Installation certificate ... why do I need this. I mean I know that it is advisable, but do I need it for building control etc?

hot off the press ... just spoke with building control and because the building work was approved and commenced before apr 2006 then no certificate required.
