The actual case is a bit more involved, I'm struggling to find how to describe it clearly.
I think you need to get someone round to quote/advise - failing that start by describing in here what the overall project is to give context as to why the rebate is needed - then some of the folks in here may be able to suggest something that will let you step around the issue rather than trying to create this rebate - a job that I really don't you are really not ready to tackle.

However, that's a chunky piece of timber to find in a wall. Chunky enough to suggest it is structural.
