Mysterious beep..

We have a smoke alarm, one of the "in-line" versions where the alarm is fitted to the "baton holder" and sits between the holder and the bulb.

In the "Summer" up here a short period of time this device kicks off, because the lamp is not lit, generally starting to beep at about 0400 AM Simply switching on the light re-charges the internal batteries on the device and the beeping stops.

Our one started with a low beep this morning, i left the light on for about 4 hours during daylight today, hay-Ho no Beeping.

I remember Googling it before and some Stack Overflow or similar result came up, suggesting I record it in each room and try to identify in which it's strongest, from the recording, since the human ear is pretty bad at detecting this. Alas, I didn't do this, or have the time to really! The geek in me probably would have found it interesting though!

That would probably be the best thing to do (and yes, I agree it would be interesting ), not least because it can sometimes be hard to tell (or maybe it's just me) what direction a sound is coming from, so a more 'scientific' way would likely be best.

Assuming you'd have time, if the beep happened again, to run around the house with a microphone that is... :D

Right, so for those who are interested (perhaps nobody, I'd not blame you), I promised I'd respond when we knew what the culprit was.... Drum roll...

Carbon Monoxide tester... in the neighbors house, in a drawer, because she thought it no longer worked (so why not bin it?!). She texted us on Sunday to say she'd finally found it!

D'oh!
