How do I change regular ceiling light to a downlight?

Thanks very much, eventually did it! Sort of..

I’ve two further problems/questions:

1. is it absolutely necessary to have the connections sit in a box? i got Wago lever connectors but to put them in a Wago junction box means I would need to strip the cabling back further.

2. How do I drill the hole with all the connectors attached? I’m convinced I’ll get mixed up if I disconnect and shove back up into the ceiling. Best I can think of is manually enlarge the hole so I can push all the connectors up out of the way. Then drill out the hole correctly.

thanks!

The connections must go in an enclosure. Wago make them just for this reason!

Your second issue is making a hole for your downlight.

You will probaby find that the existing site for the pendant will be on a joist or there will be a noggin that the pendant screwed to. Obviously you'll need to make your downlight hole in some other place, because joists don't like 60mm diameter holes being bored through them!

Damn it, too impatient and rushed ahead before the weekend is done. Ok looks like I’m going to learn the hard way.

don’t have a stud finder and didn’t guess right where the joist was! So had to re-bore. 2 more questions again!

1: how best should I fill in the missing plaster board?

2: the cable had hardly any slack in it which is the reason I was hoping I could just forget about the junction box. It could be caught somewhere but I don’t want to rip up the floor boards above to find out!

any suggestion?

btw just realised I didn’t need a stud finder/detector. A good magnet would have found the nails holding up the ceiling. Just mark two in a row to show you the direction of the joists. Arghh

1. When you cut a hole in the right place, use the bit of plasterboard you cut out to fill the hole.
2. Put the Wago connectors in a proper Wago box. That will make the joint “maintenance free” and can be left up in the ceiling. Use a long piece of new cable to run from the junction box to the new downlight position. Use a bit of stiff something to help u get from one place to the other (wire coat hanger, maybe). You shouldn’t have to rip up any flooring.
