Hello all, so.....just bought our first house, 1930's semi. Pulled up carpets in bedroom upstairs with hope of renovating floorboards and having lovely wooden boards. I have revealed a concrete hearth (read plenty about removing that on other posts) a few off the shelf spruce boards that need replacing and a random fixing that I am trying to identify so my questions for you are
1.What is this fixing?
2.Could I grind the top of it down a few mm to go flush with replacement floorboards
3. (Bonus point) what type of boards are they? You can see where I sanded a little by hand. I think pine or douglas fir, got some samples.coming but help appreciated....

Thank you in advance. I'm very new to.home ownership but have a decent set of DIY skills and a willingness to learn so forgive me if these seem like daft questions! Cheers - Nick

Almost looks like an old lead gas supply with a plug hammered in.

Give the side of the pipe a good scratch with rough sandpaper and see if it comes up shiny.

It will need a gas chap to check, as mentioned, if you want to do anything with it.

Thanks @Madrab. I basically want it out the way so will find someone to have a look and let me know. Will give it a scratch later and see what happens. Thanks for the reply.

That is an iron plug in an elbow. May or may not be live. But you have a new hearth? And intend not to use the gas. ? Are you having an electric fire or solid fuel stove? If that is a one peice hearth, which it looks like, although scale can be deceptive, it is probably not suitable for SF.

Yes- blocked off fireplace so either a gas poker or fire point
Either way get it capped safely or reuse if possible

That is just what was there when I pulled up the carpet. I intend to get rid of the hearth and replace with flooring. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for this reply.

I'll get a gas person in and see what's what perhaps before I go about knocking the hearth out.

Appreciate the response to this so far. Really helpful!
