Hi all,

Have read so many threads here with what can and cannot be done, so just seeking some clarity, please.

I wish to install a 250w towel rail in a small shower room. The cable from the unit would run through a wall to an adjoining room (hallway cupboard), so no connections in the shower room.

In the cupboard there is a standard socket ring main.
My questions please:

Could I simply plug it in with a suitable fused plug? At least one thread here says yes.
If yes, I assume a 3amp fuse?

Lastly please, if the above is okay, can I then use a standard plug in timer (suitably rated)?

Many thanks
Johan

Yes you can plug it in. 3 amp fuse, yes. Standard plug in timer, yes.

BUT the supplying circuit MUST be protected by an RCD and the towel rail must be located outside the bathroom "zones"
https://www.diynot.com/wiki/Electrics:bathroom_zones

If its inside the zones then other stuff must be considered, including the fact that the work is notifiable and would need to be done by a registered electrician.

Thanks for clarifying that.

The towel rail is definitely outside of the main zones.

I have 2 consumer units and as far as the 30amp ring main, it is protected by a circuit breaker on that smaller unit, with a main trip as well. The draw of power from that consumer unit is always minimal with just lights and sockets. Whilst the heavier draw is (kitchen, cooker and hob) taken from the other consumer unit.

Many thanks
John
