Damp at the base of removed fireplace breast

Evaporation is an extra parameter. If you have good ventilation, then evaporation works against rising damp. It reduces the maximum distance rising damp (diffusion length of you like) can achieve. In my case the distance between the pool of water to the surface was only 40cm. And there was no evaporation. So it's highly possible.

I was talking with my dad and he suggested as some ventilation. So I'll try to do that through the skirting board, cut a section and add vents to the bricks

Guys, I'll post back on my progress tenb days from now. I'm off for a trip. Any suggestions about which plaster to use will be highly appreciated.

I'm a bit reluctant to cap It with concrete add it will be a permanent cap. I'll deal it with pond lining... And put more gravel over it... So if i made a mistake i world be able to rectify
 
I agree that bobasd should apologise for language and tone. Thanks for your suggestions, i might or not agree with technical suggestions etc but that's become irrelevant at this stage

dont you even understand that to misuse the Race Card is itself well racist.

you are attempting to stand behind something thats serious
with real consequences for brave people who have to put up with the likes of you on a daily basis.
and yet you would attempt to hide behind the Race Card during a squabble such as this?

I apologise , you are correct.

Have a good holiday and when you get back hopefully the damp has dried out and you can finish off.
