Smarmy guy in the plumbers merchants

I’m not stupid (I hope!) but I’m not a tradesman either, but the lad in the shop must hold a grudge against me for something I’ve done in a past life and makes every question I ask sound like it’s from an 8-year-old. Can you help me out here?
The bath tap (1/4-turn) just spins, and the plastic collar on the spline has worn away. I need to replace that so Her Majesty can get her bath without getting on my case! So a 2-part question:-
1) I’ve called it a plastic collar, and hopefully you’re going to know what I mean, but what is it actually called?
2) is there a temporary fix I can try (I’ve had a bedroom replastered, I’m painting it ahead of fitting wardrobes and every second saved is a blessing at the moment.

If the " plastic part" fits in between the splined end of the valve and the tap handle ,its not something you will find in a plumbers merchant. Its more likely to be specific to you tap/ manufacturer.
Can you post pics of tap and parts here ? We may be able to offer solution.

The smarmy trade counter guy is defending his own lack of knowledge by trying to make you look stupid. An experienced assistant will know the questions to ask to satisfy your needs, or at least get the info he needs to serve you. Too many employers do not realise that good service is a skill and technical sales need technically minded personnel. Many a tradesman takes pleasure in upbraiding the smarmy individual, but appreciate much more, one who is efficient and saves them time waiting at a counter.
 
Why would you expect a counter monkey to be able to advise you on Technical matters ? if they were technically trained do you think they would be picking shelves for minimum wage ?

Run by children, eldest is 20 (store manager :ROFLMAO:)
Only thing they're able to do is scan barcodes.
Customer had a gift card and asked me to spend it in there.
Manager needed to be called and after much messing about i was told card was empty.
Checked online, balance £150.
Showed the children, they accused me of being rude.
I then accused them of being racist despite being same race as them.
That confused them and they all left apart from manager.
Told him he couldn't get rid of me without charging the gift card.
He called another store, i sat down, 20 minutes later he said it was all done.
Took all the stuff and dropped at customer.
Looked at receipt and said "cash".
Checked gift card balance online: £150.
Don't know how they're still in business.
Gone are the days when builder merchants employed former builders who would advise you on any project...
 
Last time I went to wickes I pre ordered a incinerator , I went in store and was greeted by a pre pubescent boy , I gave him my online order number he said they don’t have any in stock , funny that cus I walked past about ten of them in the entrance I then had to show him the item I had ordered, he turned around and said “ oh I thought that’s a bin . Ffs
 
You're right to blame Wickes for employing low-paid inexperienced staff and failing to provide training or supervision.

That was your point, wasn't it?
 
Not related to trade counter staff, but I find still relevant. I was on a training course recently, I think it was for performance, anyhow I mentioned something about our “technical managers” not being technically minded and have no trade experience whatsoever (We work in housing), and his reply was along the lines of “they don’t need to be technical,it’s more about managing people etc” - really pished me off that did. Although we do now have a gas manager and electrical manger :whistle:
