Washing machine check valve

I have seen two types of washing machine valves, with and without check valves. What is the purpise of the check valve?

A check valve allows water to flow in only one direction (a backflow prevention device). One is required on a washing machine if there’s a risk of backflow occurring, or when the hose isn’t wras approved or if there’s no air gap inside the machine.
