Hi, I need some help as I am a complete DIY amateur.

I bled a radiator yesterday which had a big air block and was only hot on the bottom 20% of the rad.

This is now boiling hot to the top, but I have lost the hot water.

The boiler is an Ideal Mexico.

Any ideas?

What's the pressure in the boiler? Needs to be about 1.5 bar. You would need to pressurise the boiler.

Thanks Bonni, I cannot find any meters on the Mexico that give me a pressure reading. How do I get this?

The boiler is an Ideal Mexico Super 3 v18.

What type of system is it? Do you have an expansion vessel in the airing/cylinder cupboard?

Yes, we have a cylinder in the airing cupboard.

And do you have an expansion vessel? Like this? Or tanks in the loft?

We've been into the loft and they small expansion tank is as dry as a bone. Looks as though it hasn't seen water in ages despite having heating and hot water.

Sorry, posts crossed. Large and small tanks in loft with small one empty. Nothing like the one in the picture.

The system is downstairs Ideal Mexico Super 3 boiler (about 25 years old). cylinder on first floor and two expansion tanks in loft.

That might have something to do with it . Go back in the loft, press down on float valve to the small tank just to make sure it’s live (still connected). If no water then it’s either not connected or a failed float valve. If it’s not connected, then you have a sealed system and a filling loop somewhere.

Had this problem before a couple of times over last 6 years and as you say press down on the float valve resolved the issue. However, now pressing it down has no effect and no water comes out as ir did before.

Then you have a fault on your float valve, either a blocked seating or a perished washer. Do not try and operate the heating until this is resolved. Either fit a new float valve or repair.

Just watched a video about replacing the valve and probably better to replace the whole thing. I guess I won't know if it's 1/2" or 3/4" until the old one is removed?

Is it just a coincidence that the hot water was lost when I bled a radiator?

as a temp measure fill the small tank with a bucket of water and bleed everything and you will have CH and HW till you can get a new ball crane , might need a few buckets but will last for many months

No.

It'll be a half-inch filling valve.

For today you can top it up by carrying a bucket of water up the ladder.

edit
too slow!
