im after a tight beam light for in the lounge to highlight a picture. My understanding is that AR111 fittings have tighter beam bulbs, down to 8 degree's I believe, a lot more than GU10. Do they require transformers or straight mains connection? Can you get GU10 in this degree angle or anything close?

Ar 111llamps until recently were mainly 12volt Halogen capsule lamps within a larger sort of 111mm Aprox 4 inch shade so they did need a transformer, looking at the lamps the connections are usually exposed but are safe due to the reduced 12volt supply.
Nowadays they are Led versions thatsupposedly run off your existing transformer or there are kits that include a led lamp and a compatible led driver
Not sure you will get such a narrow beam nowadays in any mainstream lamp as only limited halogen lamps made now and the led versions dont tend to have the reflecters that created the narrow beam

If you do, say, a Google search, you will find plenty of 10 degree GU10s - but, on the basis of a quick look, I can't find anything narrower than that.

Thinking a little laterally, if you want a narrower beam than you can easily get direct from a lamp/bulb, have you considered 'restricting' the beam width (e.g. by shining it through a 'tube' of some sort?

The traditional way of illuminating pictures is, of course, with lights designed for the purpose mounted very close to the picture.

Kind Regards, John
