Hi

I’m having the stair carpet replaced and want to try and cure the squeak on each tread.

I’ve tried screwing down into the riser but that didn’t work - I’ve since seen comment about pilot drilling the step so the screw just bites into the riser not the step.

I have no access to the u derided of the stairs, it’s plasterboard and after in the under stairs cupboard

appreciate any help and advice

fattony, good evening.

What age is the stair?

The "classic" method of stopping squeaky stairs is to attack the issue from below.

Using triangular blocks they are glued and "rubbed" into place between stringer and tread,

Or? if the treads are wedged into place it can be possible to tighten and glue up the wedges?

On "modern" stairs, the risers are at times nailed into the treads from the bottom?

Sorry no immediate answer as you cannot get access to the underside of the stair.

It may help to screw through the stringers and into the treads and risers......success not guaranteed!

The house was built in the 80’s it looks like there are just 2 nails in the steps plus what I have added.

As crude as it sounds is there a possible solution by drilling a hole into the step and spraying expanding foam or would that make it worse, just thinking the foam would fill the gaps causing the squeak

thanks
