As mentioned in another thread I have a Four 4K Reolink kit.

I currently run just two cameras into the Reolink NVR.

I would like to install a an unmanaged switch in between the cameras and the NVR.

This would allow me to have four individual Cat5s connecting the individual cameras to the switch and one cat5 connecting the switch to the NVR

Reolink are in agreement with this wiring layout but stipulate the switch has to" support active mode"

Can anyone please explain what is ment by Active Mode.

At the moment there are no PoE injectors connected.

As the Switch has its own power supply I am not sure if is necessary.

I am going to ask Reolink about this but would appreciate any advice.

How are you cameras powered?

By the looks of the info supplied by Reolink, it appears that they're assuming the cameras are powered by the NVR via the Ethernet connection.

If that's the case then you will need an un-managed POE Ethernet Switch.

Kind regards

Any PoE switch 802.3af will be "active mode". It means it negotiates with the load what voltage to send it.

Not having much experience with CCRV stuff I did not realise that placing the switch between the Cameras and the NVR prevented electricity from the NVR reaching the cameras because my swich was not the type that would send electricity

Installing injectors between the switch and each Camera got it all working.

Thanks.
