Hi all,

I’m currently working on my own extension and am about to dot and dab the walls. I understand that building regs say that these pipes should be detectable. Any suggestions how this should/can be done please. I’ve put metallic tape behind them but holding a piece of plasterboard over the pipes my detector (which is quite basic but works) doesn’t pick the tape up.

Do I really need to do something? After all I’ll know they’re there!

If so, all/any suggestions most welcome thanks.

Nick

Thanks Harry, I’ve tried sticking the tape to the back of the plasterboard but again it goes unseen by the detector!

Take a good quality photo of every wall with a pipe run, with a tape in the pic to add scale/position. Print and make a booklet; and also save pics somewhere online/with friends. Most houses have a place where they keep manuals/service records/guarantees etc. We did a vid for our house build, but it's vhs, so not so user friendly now!

What diameter are these plastic pipes :?: The microbore plastic pipes behind the plasterboard in my house were all removed and replaced with surface mounted 15mm copper pipes anyway because the plastic central heating pipes clogged up. Not being oxygen barrier type pipe didn't help but a British Gas engineer said later they were too small diameter anyway to serve large twin panel radiators on the ground floor. Just saying .

Our house has aluminium tape over the plastic pipes, this can be detected with a stud/ metal detector.
