Filling in old gas pipe

Hi,

Cadent have been replacing the old steel gas pipes in our area with new plastic ones, both the mains in the street and up to the houses. In many cases, ours included, they needed to move the meter.

We'd now like to get rid of the old steel gas pipe sticking up from the concrete floor in the old meter position, which although not connected any longer still runs out to where it used to connect to the main pipe.

I can cut it off with an angle grinder and grind it as flat as possible, but what is the best way to go about filling in the old pipe?

Cadet, or more specifically the contractors working “on behalf of” them, didn’t offer any advice.

My current thinking is to shove a bung down as far as I can then fill it level with a concrete mix but just wondered if anyone had a better idea.

Doesn’t really need anything more than a bit of cement to seal .

Yes it was, mainly due to the process of how they moved the meter, but also depended on the particular contractor as next door was left uncapped.
I have no doubt the pipe is dead, the contractor we had did say it could just be cut off in the future, and a gas engineer mate has said the same - though just to release the cap slowly to be certain!

I’ve seen the disconnected “road end” with my own eyes too.

My water mains pipe was replaced by 25mm mdpe, they did not pull out out the old lead pipe and left it in , the bit stick out in kitchen i hacked off and pushed down into floor.

why would they take the trouble to cap off a redundant gas pipe when it would have been just as simple to cut the pipe at the FFL?

They worked on a number of houses at the same time, in many cases such as ours the meter was moved in the morning, before the gas supply was disconnected and the main pipe replaced later in the day, hence capping it off.
