Our tree is big and the trunk had to be reduced to fit in the holder so there’s no room for water. The needles are falling off already.

Could I drill a 22mm hole in the trunk, bang in some copper and water it that way?

I would guess with no roots and central heating its a waste of time.

Nope.
Ringbarking kills trees by removing the bark and insodoing the water transportation. Trees live with hollow centres- no wood in the centre but a healthy transportation/ bark layer.
You will need a fresh cut bark in water solution to the problem. Bucket?

May be too late now unless you use Amazon next day delivery but we've used a 'Large Hydro Christmas tree stand' for years. The trees can easily drink a couple of pints a day with the heating on.
