New Tyres on a Budget: Which to Choose?

We've gone through 2 sets of (3x) landsail, while the yokohama on the other corner is untouched.
When swmbo needed three more tyres, I pointed this out, and the folly of keep buying landsail. The saving wasn't a saving at all, if you're changing them three times as often.
End result? All yokohamas.

I am, as I said before, a big fan of Cross Climates, we have them on our car. On number 1 son's car, I'm now thinking of Bridgestone Weather Control A005. Heard good things about them.
Anybody got them?

OK. I have decided to get rid of the tyres on the Mitsu. I am going to buy an all season tyre. Auto Express' top three are:

1. GY Vector 4seasons Gen-2

2. Conti all season contact

3. Mich Cross Climate+

I have experience of the CC+, as we have these on our car, but I thought I would look at the others, particularly as the CC+ (which was a previous AE all seaon tyre test winner) has been overtaken by the Conti and now the GY.

So, I went on tyre reviews website.

Their test categories are:

Dry Grip, Wet Grip, Road Feedback, Handling, Wear, Comfort, Snow Grip, Ice Grip.

I have looked at 5 of those in particular: Dry Grip, Wet Grip, Handling, Snow Grip and Ice Grip

The Conti has the best figures for these categories of those three tyres (apart from Dry Grip, where it loses one point to the Mich).

The average score of those three tyres is:

Conti: 89
Mich: 81.625
GY: 77.5

I have alway respected the AE product test scores, but there seems to be a discrepancy in these results.

The one AE places top of the pile, Tyre Reviews puts at the bottom.

Which should I buy? Am I overthinking this? :)

I find Michelin give long mileage, but if you don't do many miles may not be worth the extra cost.

Haven't used the cross climate as seldom see snow or ice.

What size tyre are you looking at?

The European consumer organisations (including "Which") get together to run large scale tests as they are very expensive to get meaningful results

195/55/15V.

Thanks, guys. I find the cross climate the most expensive, but black circles often have money off for more than one tyre.

Not for this size they don't......only for 16/17", not the 15" on the Mitsu.

Having watched tyre tests comparing the CC+ to the Weather Control A005, it would seem that the Bridgestone tyre performs better at wet grip.

Plus, Asda Tyres are doing £20 discount off 4 tyres and the price is better than the Mich.

The spare is a Goodyear summer tyre that I have had inspected at a tyre depot, and I am told it is in perfect condition with no repairs BUT it is as old as the car (the tyre was manufactured at the end of March 2002) and it will not match the all-season tyres I fit on the car.

Would you replace the spare with a matching tyre or leave it?

My main concern would be the effect on handling, with 3 all season tyres and one summer tyre on the car.

Edited for clarity.

Handling will be weird anyway if in 2yrs you need to use your 'new' Weather Control spare tyre along with 3 worn Weather Control tyres.

To save money I tend to put one of the old tyres I am taking off and put it onto the spare (I often change well before I get near warning marks).
This way my spare is always newish, and if I do need to use the spare I drive carefully until I asap get a new pair of tyres (as I tend to change in pairs if a significant number of miles on them).
And I again use the good one from the pair that I am removing as the new spare (meaning all four+spare are then the same).

I use CC+ and am very happy with them (but cannot say if better than worse than any other 4Season tyres). So if I am in snow and get a flat, my above money saving method then fails as my car would likely be impossible/dangerous to drive.

Note that CC+ only come with 7mm of tread, over the normal 8mm. That might mean 15% to 20% less mileage ((8-7)/(8-1.6)=0.15 or (8-7)/(8-3)=0.20). Any idea on tread thickness of Weather Control tyres?

Thanks people!

Just asked my local tyre dealer for a price.

Try and beat Asda's £81.20.

my local is a black circles agent, and told me he'd make more if I ordered through them, with him to fit, than if he tried to match their price.

There are usually offers if you buy 2 or 4.

When I bought 4 budgets from National Tyres, they matched it for the fifth (spare)

Yeah, my tyre fitter is also a fitter for BC and he told me exactly the same thing!

I asked him for a price this afternoon but he hasn't got back yet.

Thanks for update.
And interesting to hear about the tread thickness being 7.5mm, which is 0.5mm more than my CC+, but still less than normal summer tyres.
Seem to remember that all 4 season tyres have this reduced tread owing to their rubber type.

My CC+ tyres have paid for themselves by safely getting me in and out of a steeply sloping carpark where all the other cars were going sideways.

Please do update on how well they work if you get to try them on Snow.
