Add to this someone who knew who the car belonged to may have seen, or heard second/third hand, panicked and rushed to let the family know they had been killed.

Heard a story go around work like wildfire a number of years ago. A popular guy had been killed on the East Lancs Road, (A580) between Liverpool and Manchester.
Everyone in work was devastated because he was one of the most friendly people you could know. He limped in shortly before lunch time. Turns out he had been jogging into work along the grass verge, tripped in a hole and twisted his ankle. Someone had recognised him as they drove past but didn't stop as there was an ambulance and police car already at the scene. Assumed he had been killed because he was laying flat out and no-one appeared to be doing anything.
