Supernova?

The gods are obviously angry, I blame the Tories, Brexit and Global Warming. And Trump. And the drug dealers.

All their fault. Really. I studied astrophysics, so that makes me an expert. That fact that I quit after a year as it made my head hurt is irrelevant.

It would be amazing if it went supernova though.

It might have already exploded.... Wikipedia says is 700 lightyears away. So there'll be a delay of 700 years of any light or radio/x-ray/gamma rays to reach us on earth.

That's really far out, man.

We have got the wrong type of Sun for it to go Supernova.
Instead our Sun will become a Read Giant.
But we are a bit too close to enjoy the view:

Astronomers believe that our star, the Sun, is not massive enough to become a supernova.
Instead, in about 5 billion years it should dramatically expand to become a red giant and will fry the Earth.

It remains unclear whether Earth will be engulfed by the Sun or will continue in orbit. The uncertainty arises in part because as the Sun burns hydrogen, it loses mass causing Earth (and all planets) to orbit farther away. At its brightest, the red-giant Sun will be several thousand times more luminous than today but its surface will be at about half the temperature.

Don't worry, that is still about 5 billion years away, by which time humans would have already either drowned by global warming, or frozen by ice age, or just killed everybody through pollution and nuclear war.

Which could be this afternoon (although I'd prefer it to tonight, for obvious reasons:ROFLMAO:)

Ultimate Hangover cure?

(and you get a great suntan).

I was thinking more that I might actually be able to see it at night!

That said, IIRC, the supernova that is now known as the crab nebula was visible in broad daylight for weeks, according to Chinese reports of the time:eek:

They typically last a few months.

With a peak brightness comparable to that of an entire galaxy I am very happy to have 500 light years of inverse square law between me and it.

I do wonder if 4 light years from our closest neighbor star, is far enough if it went supernova (although I don't think it is a suitable star to do this).

Reading about this last night, wouldn't it be amazing to see it in our lifetime?

I do now have that annoying Oasis song in my head and can't get rid!

[gretevoiceon] "Go Supernova - How dare you!!" [/gretavoiceoff]

There, problem solved.
