Got a Mccullock 46cm with 140cc Briggs 500e. engine, self propelled. This is the one with the bigger back wheels. My first self drive mower but it is single speed and goes a bit fast. A very brisk walking pace. Is this normal or is this one running too fast ? There is no throttle so would have to fiddle the governer linkage to slow the engine. What pace do mowers generally go?

(It was an end of season sale purchase !)

If you reduce the engine speed you also interfere with the speed and volume of grass that is shot into the grass box so if possible I’d try to live with it.....if that isn’t satisfactory it should be possible to reduce the motor speed without too much bother.

We'll see in the spring - still got my old push mower. I was thinking of attaching my son's skateboard and riding that !
Seriously though, how fast do these mowers go ? What is other people's experience.

Just a 'normal' walking pace, really.....it does sound like yours is a bit brisk!
It should be possible to reduce the engine revolutions but when you consider that the motor spins at say 3600 RPM and the axle and whatever slow that to around 100 RPM at the wheels, the reduction in engine speed would have to be quite significant to make a difference.

Hmmmm - I'm wandering if they have used the same drive 'gearbox' as used on the model with smaller wheels, with bigger wheels it goes faster.

I doubt they would use a different box, more likely to use different size pulley and belt which you could look into you find it too fast?

Can you not disengage the driving mechanism? I set my Atco to quite a fast running speed (to cut the grass more effectively) but push it by hand.

Should've got an old Hayter - variable speed, good for us old gits.;)

dal5band, yeah I got a mower, opted for self-propelled but didn't go as far as variable speed. Uphill is fine but on the flat it's a bit like wacky races.

Yeah, I'm thinking that down the track (when it's out of warranty!) I'll maybe try to hack the drive mechanism. Should be just a case of changing the size of a pulley.
