Here is a pic of the gate fitted - as you can see its on the ground.

Try about 1/2" worth of large washers and see what the effect is.

1/2" I suspect might lift the gates off the hinge pegs. I am inclined now to suggest having flat plates made up, complete with welded on brackets, then drilled and fixed to the stone pillars the appropriate amount higher, after cutting the present ones off flush.

Washers did the trick. Raised gate high enough to rub on ground. Dipped them in grease. Is it dangerous to have the holes nearly level with the top of the pins? Will they come off pins?

No, they won’t come off.
It won’t stop anyone nicking them though  which is why the lower crook is often fitted upside down.
John :)

To stop them coming off, or delay them being stolen - drill and tap a hole down the centre of the pin from the top. Then fit a bolt and a large 'penny washer'.

Good call Harry - a little difficult to get the drill and tap in there though?
On occasion, I've cross drilled through the crook, lost a washer and replaced it with a large split pin.
John :)

What chance does keitai have of drilling a hole or welding the top pin when he can't even work out how to raise the gate.

Going by the pictures, he did manage to work out how to do it so maybe, with the help of the good people on the forum, he'll manage to secure them, too.
