I have just had delivery of 3 bitumen roof sheets painted on one side. I want to line a wall with them and paint the painted side with a lighter colour.

As they are already painted could I just coat them with an eggshell paint or would I need to seal the original paint in some way before coating them ?

They still smell a bit of the bitumen so will I also need to coat the unpainted underside to seal as well or will it just fade away after a week or two ?

Never heard of any paint for bitumen apart from black, looks nice, I would contact the suppliers for advice.

bitumen is soft and expands/contracts with temperature. It is not suitable for painting, which will crack or crocodile.

it is intended to prevent water penetration so should be on the damp face.

Why do you want to paint it?

Bought them for an outside roof but decided that with a lighter colour they could be used to line the walls of a room inside. Just like to use different textures on walls like plywood or old pallets. They are already coated but they do smell a bit of bitumen so that with the fact you say they will expand and contract rules it out, unless I use some sort of rubberised paint but that seems too much bother

I don't want to rain on your parade but you might want to find out if it is actually safe to use indoors, not only from a health perspective but also with regards to fire risks.

I recognise the problem so am only using one sheet on a landing. 1m x 3m which I have sealed on the bitumen side with a couple of coats of PVA and used some acrylic paint on the other so it now now sealed all round. Bitumen paint is often used as a form of damp proofing but I agree it is not something I would recommend or use again
