Hot water venting into cold water tank

The guy who fixed the boiler was a recommended plum er ( not a heating engineer ) . There are 2 pipes that vent into the large tank, none into the smaller tank. I can't tell if the water is dirty running into the tank should I take a sample ?. Boiler is off at moment . Can I use immersion to hear water ?

I also forgot to mention i have tried the system with both HW & CH on, HW on its own and CH on its own. All 3 times the CW tank overflows because HW is venting into CW tank.

It's coming from your overheating boiler. Not from your hot tapwater or hot cylinder.

Should I get someone to look at the overheat thermostat I just had fitted ?

You need a heating engineer who can determine why your boiler is overheating.

The overheat stat should only come into play if the functional temperature control has failed.

So you appear to have two faults on your boiler.

The reason why it is overheating/over pumping needs to be established and corrected. You also need the pipework looking at, and any necessary alterations made. If boiler is overheating, then water should be being vented into the small cistern, not the big one.
